At Hooked on Johnson Games, we pride ourselves on delivering a high-quality product that enhances your tabletop gaming experience. However, achieving this balance has not been without its hurdles, especially when it comes to packaging. We’ve faced significant challenges in sourcing a box that is both cost-effective and meets our quality expectations.
We’ve explored numerous options, finding vendors who can produce game boxes for $8-12 each. However, these vendors are located in China, and while they offer a potentially great product, there’s always the risk of minimal recourse if the boxes don’t meet our expectations. Conversely, the custom box makers we’ve found in the USA are asking for $30-50 per box — that’s more than we can afford to spend on the entire game!
In our quest to find the perfect solution, we’ve discovered a vendor who can create a custom box that doubles as both a game box and a shipping box. This innovation not only meets our quality standards but also supports our commitment to a more sustainable and efficient production process. We hope that you’ll love this practical and stylish solution as much as we do.
The Road Ahead: Committed to Quality and Innovation
As we continue to navigate the complexities of game production, we remain steadfast in our commitment to quality and innovation. We’re working tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of SKUNK'D, from the cards to the dice to the packaging, reflects the high standards that you, our valued supporters, expect and deserve.
Thank you for your unwavering support and patience as we overcome these challenges. We’re excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to share the final product with you. We remain on track to hit our August 1st release date! We view every challenge as just another step toward creating a game that’s truly SCENT-sational!

SIMON SAYS…
What makes SKUNK’D so much stinkin’ fun?
Reader's Question: Simon, I am a lifelong Farkle player. Isn’t SKUNK'D just Farkle with a skunk theme?
Simon Says: I’m a Farkle Fanatic, too! There are similarities between the two games because both Farkle and SKUNK’D are descendants of the dice game Dix Mille, which gained popularity in France in the 1800’s, as well as other dice games that, according to folklore, date back to the Middle Ages. Let’s delve deeper into the fascinating probabilities that make SKUNK’D and Farkle both thrilling and unique.
SKUNK’D and Farkle are both popular dice games that revolve around rolling combinations for points, but they differ significantly in gameplay dynamics, scoring potential, and the speed at which the games are played. This analysis examines the key differences between the two, focusing on the probabilities of key events and the impact of game mechanics such as the Mega and Carbuncle rules in SKUNK’D.
Probability of Skunking vs. Farkling
SKUNK’D has a unique feature called a Mega, which occurs when a player rolls three or more of a kind in a single roll. When this Mega is in 2s, 3s, 4s, or 6s, any future rolls of the same number become scoring dice and reduce the likelihood of Skunking. Conversely, in Farkle, rolling three of a kind sets those dice aside as scoring dice, but additional rolls of the same number do not add to the score, maintaining a higher risk of failing to score (Farkling). The table below highlights the probabilities of Skunking in SKUNK’D and Farkling in Farkle:
Key Observations:
With 2 or 3 dice, SKUNK'D with a Mega in the den presents a significantly lower likelihood of failing to score than Farkle by a ratio of about 2.5 to 1.
For a single die, SKUNK'D with a Mega has a 50.00% chance of Skunking, compared to Farkle’s higher 66.67%.
Conclusion: SKUNK’D provides a lower risk of Skunking with the Mega rule, encouraging players to take risks and prolong their turns for higher scores, while Farkle's higher probabilities of Farkling foster a more cautious gameplay approach.
Probability of Completing a Sequence
The likelihood of completing a sequence in SKUNK’D with a Mega in the den vs. Farkle illustrates the differences in the scoring potential and pace of the games.
Key Observations:
With 2 or 3 dice, SKUNK’D offers a significantly higher chance of completing a sequence than Farkle.
For 1 die, SKUNK’D maintains better odds (1 in 2) than Farkle (1 in 3).
Conclusion: The higher probabilities of completing sequences in SKUNK’D encourage players to take bold moves, contributing to a faster-paced and more dynamic gameplay experience compared to Farkle's more measured approach.
The Role of Mega and Carbuncle Rules in SKUNK'D
The Mega rule in SKUNK’D allows players to significantly lower their chances of Skunking by turning subsequent rolls of the same number into scoring dice. This encourages continuous play and higher risk-taking.
The Carbuncle rule in SKUNK’D occurs when a player rolls one or two pairs with the remaining dice being Skunks or 5s, allowing them to move all six dice into the den and continue their turn. Each pair in a Carbuncle is worth 250 points, leading to high potential scores and extending the player’s turn. This rule is absent in Farkle, making SKUNK’D inherently more dynamic and conducive to quick, high scoring.
Summary
SKUNK'D and Farkle offer distinctly different gameplay experiences, particularly in terms of risk and reward dynamics. SKUNK'D's unique rules like the Mega and Carbuncle provide for lower probabilities of failure and higher chances of completing sequences, leading to a engaging and varied gameplay experience. Conversely, Farkle's more traditional approach maintains a higher risk of failure with fewer dice, resulting in a slower pace and more conservative strategy.
I hope these insights enhance your understanding and appreciation of both games. Happy rolling!

Fun and Funky Facts About Skunks
Greetings, Skunk Lovers! Today, we’re diving into the wild, wonderful world of our furry and fragrant friends — the skunks! While our beloved SKUNK'D mascot is a North American Striped Skunk, there's a whole lot more to these adorable critters than meets the eye (or the nose). So, read on and enjoy some fun, silly, and little-known skunk facts that will make you the life of the next game night!
Striped, Spotted, and... Smelly?
1. Stripes and Spots Galore!
Did you know there are actually 12 different species of skunks? While the North American Striped Skunk (our mascot) is the most iconic, skunks come in various patterns. There are spotted skunks that do the cutest handstands before spraying, and hooded skunks with luxurious white manes. It's like a fashion show in the animal kingdom, with each skunk sporting its unique style!
2. Skunk Superpowers!
Skunks are like the superheroes of the animal world, equipped with a powerful defense mechanism — their spray. This smelly weapon is a mix of sulfur-containing chemicals that can be aimed with pinpoint accuracy up to 10 feet. Think of it as nature's way of saying, "Back off, or you’ll regret it!" But here's the fun part: skunks usually warn you first by stamping their feet and turning their backs. It's their way of being polite before launching their stinkbomb!
3. Tomato Juice? Busted!
A little-known fact is that a skunk’s spray is so potent that it can be detected by humans from up to 1 mile away! If you ever find yourself on the receiving end, don’t panic. Tomato juice may cover up the stench but, according to the Mythbusters TV Show, what you need is a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a dash of dish soap. It's a stink-tastic recipe!
Stink-ertainment and Misconceptions
1. Skunks are Party Animals!
These little guys love a good night out. Skunks are nocturnal and often seen waddling around in search of their favorite snacks like bugs, berries, and sometimes even the odd leftover from your trash can. They’re nature’s cleanup crew, making sure nothing goes to waste.
2. Pepe-Love is in the Air!
Skunks are quite the romantics. During the mating season in late winter, male skunks travel long distances to find a mate, often covering up to 5 miles a night. That's a lot of ground for those short little legs! They might be solitary creatures most of the year, but come Valentine's Day, they're out looking for love.
3. Skunks: The Unsung Heroes
Despite their reputation, skunks are incredibly beneficial to the ecosystem. They eat pests like grubs, insects, and small rodents, helping farmers protect their crops. So next time you see a skunk, remember they’re more than just a pretty (or smelly) face — they're essential contributors to our environment!
Fun Fact Finale!
Did you know that skunks have been domestic pets since the days of Honest Abe? In the 19th century, some households had domesticated skunks to help control pests. They are known to be affectionate and playful, just like cats or dogs! While, today, it's legal only in certain States, it shows that there's more to skunks than their scent.
Remember, in the world of SKUNK'D, the only thing stinkier than losing is missing out on all these fun facts about our favorite creature! And before you know it, SKUNK’D will be coming to a mailbox near you! Happy gaming, and may your dice rolls be as lucky as a skunk’s warning shot!
